Natural views over London and the Surrey downs countryside restored.
Broombank Quarry situated on the Downs within a stones throw of Biggin Hill Airfield, was restored by Barton to the landform levels prior to its use for quarrying. Previously used for sand and gravel extraction the restoration works involved the cut and fill of some 200,000 m3 of material to provide a drained profile to match the surrounding landscape.
The area is to be used as pasture for horses and as such will blend in with the surroundings in what is a beautiful part of the country. With views to the north over London and to the south over the Downs the restoration works have returned the area to its original tranquil form with local residents able to enjoy panoramic views. Views that have been obscured as a result of screening placed to conceal the quarrying activities.
The site was strewn with fly-tipped rubbish and was infested with Japanese Knotweed. The fly-tipped rubbish was carefully sorted, inert spoils were buried within the restoration areas and the rubbish was removed to licensed landfill nearby. Barton developed a Knotweed Management Plan which was submitted to the Local Authority for approval prior to works starting.
The works have been completed in compliance with Surrey County Council Principal Planning Enforcement Officer’s requirements.
