Completed ahead of programme despite the complexity of the site.
Barton, working for Simons Construction, were contracted to carry out the bulk earthworks and stone fill package for the construction of this £17.5m facility. The facility was built to receive 70% of Asda’s non-food goods imports. The development covers 380,000 ft2.
The project was being built on reclaimed land within the Teesport. Situated within the flood plane the ground was saturated. Over 5,300 piles were installed due to the complex ground conditions. Barton were required to liaise closely with the civil engineering and piling contractors to meet the programme requirements.
The 34,000 m3 cut and fill operation was undertaken throughout the autumn months. Carefull selection of suitable on site material for re-use as fill was required. A gabion wall was constructed, as a variation to the contract, to uphold the edge of the goods-in yard adjacent to a large ‘V’ shaped ditch that acted as a balancing reservoir for the yard run-off water. Despite the complex nature Barton Plant’s works were completed ahead of programme.
